Menopause Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural transition that occurs as you move past your reproductive years. This phase is different for every woman, but virtually all notice the changes as the body prepares to stop menstruating.

Each woman is born with a limited number of eggs; you do not produce more throughout your life. Once you begin menstruating, your ovaries release one egg every month. Your ovaries are also responsible for producing the hormones progesterone and estrogen.

When will I go through menopause?

Menopause does not happen on a set schedule. Most women begin the process after the age of 40, but it’s possible to enter menopause earlier. That usually occurs as a result of a hysterectomy or some type of damage to your ovaries.

Natural menopause has three stages: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. Women move through these stages at different rates based on genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

What are the signs of menopause?

One of the most common signs of menopause is known as hot flashes. These sudden sensations of warmth extend quickly throughout your upper body and can cause your skin to flush and sweating to increase.

Additional symptoms include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Racing heartbeat
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Insomnia
  • Bladder control issues

You might experience a combination of multiple symptoms, or you may only notice a few of these issues as you move through menopause.

What are some menopause treatment options?

Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, is the primary course of treatment for menopause symptoms. Hormones can be delivered via pills, topical gels, or skin patches. Many HRT approaches use a combination of estrogen and progesterone, but some use only one type of hormone.

Hormone replacement therapy can alleviate many symptoms, but as with any medication, there are risks that must be weighed against the benefits these drugs provide.

Lifestyle modification including a healthy diet and increased physical activity can address many menopause symptoms. Certain vitamins and minerals can also be effective. Work with your OB/GYN to help find the treatment path that’s right for you.
